History
When Wendi Middleton, Director and Founder of Angel's Wings, Inc., was granted permission to be in the delivery room with an inmate Mom, she made several observations. One of those observations was that this was definitely not like any childbirth experience she had ever seen or had. The Mother was in the labor/delivery room with a correctional officer and things were kept very impersonal. The Mother gave birth and was allowed to spend 24 hours recovering and spending time with her baby before she had to return to the prison and the caregiver picked up the baby. Wendi knew that no matter what circumstances this child was coming into this world under, this was still Mom & baby. Her heart broke because she felt this experience should be as special for this Mother as it was for her. Thus, Kelli's Kloset was born!
Purpose
The purpose of Kelli's Kloset is to make an inmate Mom's trip to the hospital a very special time, just as it is for most Mothers who deliver a brand new baby.
Details
Kelli's Kloset will provide a small diaper bag filled with a brand new newborn outfit of clothing, infant booties, brush, baby hygiene items, and an infant wash cloth. This diaper bag will be given to the Mother at the prison for her to take with her to the hospital when she goes into labor.
Kelli's Kloset will host a baby shower for pregnant offenders inside the prison every four months. At this shower, the Moms will be given their diaper bag, as well as a small gift. This gift will include hygiene items and other small incentives deemed appropriate by the correctional facility, such as paper, ink pens, Bibles, books, etc.
Funding
This program will be strictly volunteer-driven. We hope to build partnerships with local area churches, corporations, and civic groups to sponsor each of the baby showers. This would also be a great idea for a Christmas project.
