Get on Board 2008!

Angel's Wings was chosen to participate in the Lacy Leadershp Association's Get on Board event held at the Eiteljorg Museum in downtown Indy on Wednesday, Oct. 15th. We met lots of interested volunteers and potential board members and learned about many other awesome non-profit organizations in our community.

We will be hosting a follow-up event on Wednesday, October 29th in the offices of Midwest Title Company, 755 E. Main Street, Greenwood, IN (in the Valle Vista complex). The reception will be held from 4:00 to 5:00 pm. If you know of anyone interested in being involved, please pass along the info.

 Kelli's Kloset

The September in-prison baby shower was a huge success!! There were almost 30 expectant Moms in attendance and 7 volunteers! Thank you to everyone who donated both their time and financial resources to help make a difference in the lives of these Moms and their babies!

Our next in-prison baby shower is scheduled for January. The total cost to sponsor a baby shower is approximately $1500, but we accept all donations. This is an important event for the Family Preservation Center at the women's prison. It provides some much-needed supplies for these infants and their caregivers. In January, 2009, we will celebrate FOUR YEARS of providing these families with much-needed supplies for their newborns!

The Mentors for Moms sub-committee has been busy putting together a volunteer mentor training manual and working on the details for our very first mentor training.  We are hoping to have at least five expectant mothers at the Indiana Women’s Prison matched with a volunteer mentor this year.  We are currently looking for volunteer mentors!  Contact us at info@angelswingsinc.org.

 

The board of Angel’s Wings is looking at new and exciting ways to start caring for infants whose mothers are incarcerated.  We attended a state orientation on the qualifications/training necessary to become a licensed child placement agency in Indiana.  We are currently working to develop a budget and timeline and hope to be licensed soon.

The female prison population in the United States has more than doubled since 1990.  At the end of 2002, almost 100,000 women were under the jurisdiction of state or federal correctional authorities.  Approximately 75% of these women are mothers and two-thirds of them have children under the age of 18.  Fifty-Four percent of mothers in state prison said they never had visits from their children.
