  • Women are the fastest-growing segment of the US prison population
  • 70% of these women have at least 1 child under the age of 18
  • The Adoption and Safe Families Act of 1997 terminates parental rights, with few exceptions, if a child has been in foster care for 15 of the previous 22 months.
  • Children with incarcerated mothers are more likely to refuse to eat, wet their beds and do poorly in school.
  • From 1997 to 2002, the number of female offenders incarcerated in the state of Indiana increased 46%.
