Facts
- Women are the fastest-growing segment of the US prison population
- 70% of these women have at least 1 child under the age of 18
- The Adoption and Safe Families Act of 1997 terminates parental rights, with few exceptions, if a child has been in foster care for 15 of the previous 22 months.
- Children with incarcerated mothers are more likely to refuse to eat, wet their beds and do poorly in school.
- From 1997 to 2002, the number of female offenders incarcerated in the state of Indiana increased 46%.
- Every year, over 100 women give birth to babies while incarcerated in Marion County alone.
- Children who have one or more parents in prison are 6 times more likely to end up in prison themselves.
- Half of the 1.5 million children with an incarcerated parent will commit a crime before they turn 18.
- There are over 4000 children living in Marion County alone who have one or more parents incarcerated.
